Treatments we offer
Hernias don’t simply disappear without surgical removal. At Fairfield clinics, our expert surgeons perform the best surgical procedures for treating Hernias based on their type and size.
1. Open Hernia Repair

Treatments we offer

This is the oldest form of hernia surgery. In this procedure, the surgeon makes the cut right over the hernia on your skin to reach the hernia. The bulged tissue is positioned back to its correct location and the hernia sac is removed. The skin and the weakened muscle opening through which the hernia had bulged are closed with sutures.

2. Hernioplasty (Mesh Repair)

Treatments we offer

In Hernioplasty, the surgeon uses a mesh instead of closing the muscle opening with sutures. Hernia mesh, also known as surgical mesh, is a flat, sterile sheet of plastic or biological material that is used to cover the hernia (use of surgical mesh can decrease operative time and speed up recovery time). The surgeon stitches the mesh into the healthy tissues that surround the hernia. This enables the damaged tissue to use the mesh and support to regrow.

3. Laparoscopic Hernia Repair

Treatments we offer

This procedure is performed under general anaesthesia. It is done by making small incisions (1 to 4 in number) in the abdomen (upper and lower abdomen) using a laparoscope (a thin flexible tube with an attached camera that provides a live image of the inside of your body which is projected on the monitor).

  • The surgeon slowly moves the herniated body part to its original position by placing a mesh patch over the weakened portion of the abdominal wall.
  • The mesh is then secured with the help of staples or stitches.
  • The incision is then closed with sutures (stitches).
4. Robotic Hernia Repair

Treatments we offer

The procedure is the same as laparoscopic hernia repair but here, electronic devices with high tech cameras, smaller incisions are used to aid the surgeon during the procedure. In robotic surgery, it is the robotic hands that perform the surgery, which is controlled by the surgeon sitting on the console and controlling them to perform the surgery/procedure. Robotic surgery in hernias is used for smaller hernias and to repair the abdominal wall.

What is Hernia?

A Hernia is a bulging, inflated protrusion that usually occurs within the abdominal cavity, causing intense pain and discomfort. Hernia grows when an organ breaks through a weakened spot in the area surrounding it, causing it to bulge out of the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

Normally, hernias require surgery, but in hiatal hernia, a type that occurs when a part of the stomach pushes into the chest cavity, sticking to a healthy diet and consuming small portions of food during the day can help reduce the symptoms.

Hernia surgeries are usually performed by general surgeons or laparoscopic surgeons.

Though complications with Hernia surgeries are rare, they include infection, bleeding from the surgical site, tingling, and numbness in the affected area. These symptoms however don’t occur when your surgery is performed by expert doctors.

After surgery, you should contact your doctor if you experience high fever, severe pain, bleeding, or foul-smelling fluids oozing from the site of surgery.

Your doctor will schedule a follow-up appointment 7-10 days after the surgery, to ensure complete recovery. Stitches will also be removed during the appointment.

The cost depends on the kind of surgery. Open Hernia surgeries cost between INR 30,000 and INR 60,000, while Laparoscopic surgeries cost INR 80,000. These costs may vary according to the procedure, complexities associated with the disease, institution, and geographical location.

Some general advice to follow after the surgery

The recovery period depends on the type of procedure. Most people can resume their regular activities within 2-3 weeks of their surgery. During this period, you will be prescribed medication (painkillers and antibiotics), to prevent any bacterial infections. In the first days after the hernia surgery, you would experience some pain. You can follow these tips to speed up your recovery:
