What is an Mastectomy?
Mastectomy is the surgical removal of one or more tissues from the breast to primarily treat all stages of breast cancer. In certain cases, the lymph nodes may also be removed during the surgery since they are the nearby tissues. Your doctor may also recommend a Mastectomy even though you may not have breast cancer but may have a high risk of developing the disease.
Mastectomy is done to treat cancer in its later stages. When the tumor is in its early stages and hasn’t spread, it can be treated with Lumpectomy by removing the tumor and a margin of tissue around it. A patient needs a mastectomy when Lumpectomy is no longer an option owing to the increased size or increased number of locations of the tumor.

Our doctors may advise you to lay off medication that affects blood clotting for at least one week before the surgery, as a preventive measure. You would also be instructed to not eat or drink for at least eight to twelve hours prior to the surgery.
Once the surgery is through, you might need a 1–3-day rest at the hospital. Our skilled team of doctors would hold you back in the recovery room as per the protocol to monitor your vitals- blood pressure, pulse, and breathing. Experiencing minor pain, numbness, and a pinching sensation in your underarm is common post-surgery. The doctor will then provide you with a prescription to tackle pain through medication and antibiotics. You would also be given instructions for post-surgery care by our doctors.
Once you’ve been discharged from the hospital, our doctors would recommend you complete bed rest until the fatigue wears off. You must take care of the bandage where the incision was made and the drainage tube which needs to be removed after two weeks post the first follow-up visit. You must keep the operated area completely clean and dry and take a sponge bath until your doctor allows you to shower. Lastly, avoid exercising post-surgery, apart from the light and easy arm exercises that the doctor may recommend you.
Delaying a surgery of this nature would increase the risk of cancer as it may further progress. Therefore, treatment should start at the earliest once the cancer has been diagnosed since the stage of the cancer is directly linked to the severity and chances of survival. Thus, it is not advisable to delay a mastectomy.
