It’s a 20-minute procedure wherein a tiny incision is created in the eardrum by our surgeon with a laser or a sharp instrument. Meanwhile, to ensure the doctor has a clear view of the internal and middle ear, a small microscope in placed while the surgery is being conducted. Using suction, the fluid is then emptied out of the middle ear and a small grommet is injected and left for the drainage to go smoothly. Once the process is through, the patient’s ear is packed with cotton and the eardrums are left for healing without any stitches.
What is Myringotomy?
Myringotomy is performed to fix hearing loss caused by fluid buildup which can delay speech and language development in children because of impaired hearing. It is also done to place tympanostomy tubes which help equalize the pressure to combat recurring infections and fluid buildup behind the eardrum. In case the patient does not respond to the medical treatment prescribed by doctors, this surgery helps treat recurring episodes of infection. Additionally, Myringotomy is also conducted to treat barotrauma in adults caused by changes in the atmospheric pressure.
The complications during Myringotomy surgery can include:
- Scarring
- Hardening of the eardrum
- Injury to surrounding structures near the ear
- Incessant draining of pus from the ear
Our surgeons will instruct you to refrain from drinking anything for at least 8 to 10 hours before the surgery to help the anaesthesia work on you which will happen only on an empty stomach. You will also be instructed to stop consuming medicines like blood thinners, aspirin, and pain killers at least two weeks prior to the surgery to reduce any potential risk of bleeding.
After the surgery, your condition will be carefully monitored in the recovery room. The doctors will check your vitals like you blood pressure, breathing, temperature and pulse.
At home:
- Once discharged, our doctors will advise you to diligently take all prescribed medication for early recovery and to not clean your ear post surgery or put anything in the ear apart from ear-drops or cotton.
- The cotton that you use should be replaced on a timely basis to help absorb all the post-surgical drainage.
- You will be recommended to keep checking for any discharge from the ear.
- The doctors will ask you to be cautious while bathing to ensure that water doesn’t enter the ear.
Delay in surgery could lead to unnecessary pain and even impair one’s hearing ability permanently. It can also delay speech development in children and lead to further complications if not treated urgently.
