1. Excision and Primary Closure

Treatments we offer

Excision and Primary Closure is the method that involves the removal of the part of the skin which consists of the sinus (by cutting out an oval flap on either side) and stitching the skin back together. The wound heals faster compared to the open technique but the chances of the infection coming back are higher.

2. Wide Excision

Treatments we offer

The method of wide excision involves the removal of the sinus along with a wide margin of the skin around the sinus. Here the wound is not stitched close but is left open to heal by itself. A sterile dressing is applied over the wound and it takes 4-5 weeks for complete recovery. This process is called healing by secondary intention. The advantage of this method is that there is complete removal of the infected tissue and a lower risk of recurrence.

3. Plastic Surgery Technique

Treatments we offer

The plastic surgery technique is used when there is recurring sinus formation or the wound is extensively large. Sinus is removed by surgery and the skin is refashioned by taking a flap from the nearby skin. This is a 2 – 3 hour procedure and is done under general anesthesia. The patient is required to stay in the hospital for 2 to 3 days after the procedure.

4. Laser Surgery Technique (Laser epilation of the natal cleft)

Treatments we offer

The laser surgery technique is adopted by many surgeons as an adjunct to surgical interventions. Laser surgery has the advantage of preventing the recurrence of the sinus, which conventional and surgical treatments lack. Several patients opt for the laser surgery technique for a painless treatment.

5. Non-Surgical Method

Treatments we offer

According to the latest upgrades, the best treatment option for pilonidal sinus disease is crystallized phenol treatment with laser depilation. It is considered to be minimally invasive and continues to find more support. The most common conservative treatment is the administration of phenol to the sinuses.

What is a Pilonidal Sinus?

Pilonidal sinus is a type of skin infection. Here, a small hole or cyst (fluid or pus-filled sac) develops in the skin in the cleft of the buttocks. A pilonidal sinus develops when hair in that area curls over and grows into the skin, resulting in an infection. It forms a tract that opens into the skin as a whole. Many times, it gets infected and leads to the formation of pus and blood, causing severe pain.

Pilonidal Sinus is an abnormal skin growth located at the tailbone that consists of hair and skin. The cyst is generally located near the tailbone and can get easily infected. Symptoms of an infected cyst involve pain, reddened skin, or drainage of pus or blood. The treatment for this condition includes drainage and surgical removal of the cyst.

Frequently Asked Questions

The postoperative complications in the first month can include wound infection signs such as pain, tenderness and erythema, along with hematoma, seroma, and wound separation.

A primary care physician, emergency medicine physician, a general surgeon, or a colorectal surgeon can perform the procedure if the cyst needs to be drained.

A colorectal, as well as a general surgeon can thus perform the surgery as they have been trained to administer this treatment.

Treatment without surgery can be managed by simply removing the hair embedded in the sinus, if it is not infected. Moreover, laser hair removal in the region can help prevent further complications of the patients.

Normal surgeries cost around INR 40,000 to INR 45,000. Laser surgeries can cost you around INR 55,000 to INR 60,000 depending upon the type of surgery. This may vary on a case-to-case basis depending upon the procedure, complexities associated with the disease, institution, and geographical location.

If the cyst has been infected or is painful for the patient, the procedure is usually covered by insurance. The surgery will not be covered by insurance if the cyst removal is for cosmetic purposes.

The patient is taken to the recovery room after the surgery and is kept under observation for 45 minutes – 2 hours. The patient may have to stay for a longer period depending on the pilonidal surgery and how fast they wake from the anaesthesia.
