Open Appendectomy
Your doctor may choose to perform an open appendectomy if your appendix has ruptured (burst) and the infection has spread into the abdomen. In open surgery, the doctor will be able to clean your abdominal cavity if the appendix has burst. During open appendectomy, a large incision or a cut is made over the lower right side of your abdomen. Once the doctor accesses the appendix, it is tied up with the stitches and removed. If the appendix has ruptured, then the doctor will wash your abdomen with saline and put a small drain (a plastic tube) in the incision to remove the excess fluids. The skin incision is then closed with the help of sutures, staples, or glue.
Treatments we offer
Laparoscopic Appendectomy
This technique is performed through 3 to 4 small incisions. Through the incision, a small tube called a cannula is inserted. This helps give the surgeon a better view of the abdomen internally. Once the abdomen is inflated, an instrument called a laparoscope is inserted through the incision. Once the appendix is located, surgical instruments are inserted through another incision to remove it. Then, a drain is put in the incision to remove the remaining excess fluid during healing. The drain is removed after a day or two days once the excess fluid is drained out.
The incisions are then closed with sutures, staples, glue, or clips.
Treatments we offer
Robotic Laparoscopic Appendectomy
This is a recent development in the technology of laparoscopic surgeries. Here, the procedure is the same as in laparoscopic appendectomy but in this, electronic devices with high-tech cameras, smaller incisions aid the surgeon during the procedure. In Robotic Laparoscopic Appendectomy surgery, it is the robotic hands that perform the surgery, which is controlled by the surgeon sitting on the console and controlling them to perform the surgery/procedure, contrary to the traditional laparoscopy surgery where the surgeon stands at the side of the patient and does the surgery.
What is an Appendectomy?
Appendectomy is a surgical procedure that is done to remove the appendix. It is performed as an emergency surgery when your appendix becomes inflamed and infected.
The appendix is a tube-like bag that is attached to your large intestine and is located on the lower right side of your abdomen. Your body can function normally without an appendix as it is a vestigial organ.
what's the need for Appendectomy?
Appendectomy is done in the case of appendicitis. When the appendix becomes inflamed or swollen, bacteria can quickly multiply inside the organ leading to pus formation. This can cause pain near your belly button that spreads to the right lower side of the abdomen. Hence, surgery needs to take place.
When a patient experiences pain in your lower right belly or pain near the navel that moves lower, this is usually the first sign. Loss of appetite, Nausea, and vomiting soon after belly pain begins, are signs of the need for Appendectomy.
what are the symptoms for appendectomy?
Symptoms of appendicitis are similar in adults, children, and pregnant females but with some differences.
Symptoms in Adults :
Symptoms in Adults include sudden aching pain starting near your belly button and spreading to the right side of the lower abdomen. Pain worsening on coughing, walking, or other strenuous activities is also a symptom in adults. Nausea, vomiting, Diarrhoea, or Constipation are also some of the symptoms. Decrease in appetite, Difficulty in passing gas and low-grade fever is the symptom found in adults.
Symptoms in Children :
Symptoms in Children include nausea and/or vomiting. Bloating of the abdomen is also a symptom in children. Pain in the abdomen/ pain in the abdomen spreading to the right lower side of the abdomen are also symptoms found in children.
Symptoms During Pregnancy :
These are similar to the symptoms in adults with the exception of the location of the pain. The pain may occur in the upper abdomen instead of the lower right side of the abdomen as the growing baby pushes the appendix higher in the abdomen during pregnancy. Heartburn can also be an additional symptom in a pregnant woman.
what are the causes of appendectomy?
The causes include Blockage of the opening inside the appendix, inflammatory bowel disease, and trauma to your abdomen. An enlarged tissue in the wall of your appendix, caused by an infection in the gastrointestinal (GI) tract or elsewhere in your body is a major cause. Stool, parasites, or growths that can clog your appendiceal lumen can also cause Appendix.
PostOperative Care
After the procedure, you will be required to stay in the recovery room for a few hours until the effect of the anaesthesia wears off. Your vital signs such as pulse rate, body temperature, and blood pressure will be monitored during this time. Painkillers will be given by your doctor to provide relief. Once you are stable, you will be moved to a general ward. Then, you will be advised to start ambulating (walking) with assistance the same day after your surgery to prevent the formation of blood clots and infections. Eventually, you will be discharged the next day or in 1 to 2 days after surgery, once the pain subsides and you are able to ambulate.
