What is Sigmoidoscopy?

Sigmoidoscopy is a procedure that enables the doctor to look inside your sigmoid colon and rectum. The major part of your large intestine known as the colon is responsible for the absorption of water and nutrients from the food you eat. The sigmoid colon is the lower part of your colon which is connected to the anus through the rectum.

Sigmoidoscopy is performed using a long, flexible tube called a sigmoidoscope, that has an attached light and camera at the end. This helps the doctor in diagnosing any abnormalities in the sigmoid colon and the rectum. Sigmoidoscopy is an outpatient procedure, which means that you can go home the same day after the procedure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sigmoidoscopy is a procedure that helps examine only the lower portion of the large intestine, whereas a colonoscopy helps examine the entire colon.

Sigmoidoscopy has a number of benefits over colonoscopy. Firstly, it requires less time for bowel preparation that makes it easier for the patient. Secondly, less sedation is required, hence a low risk of complications from anaesthesia. Sigmoidoscopy has fewer side effects and is easy to perform.

The only disadvantage of sigmoidoscopy is that the doctor can examine only the left side of the colon and remove the polyps (if present). For removal of polyps that are present on the right side, colonoscopy is to be done.

You might feel mild discomfort during the insertion of the sigmoidoscope, but the procedure is not painful and it does not require anaesthesia.

Sigmoidoscopy can cost around INR 4,000 depending upon the type of surgery. Cost may vary on a case-to-case basis depending upon the procedure, complexities associated with the disease, institution, and geographical location.

Sigmoidoscopy is a safe procedure and complications are rare. A few of the possible risks include Bleeding from the site in case of a biopsy and Infection in the area of the incision. Inflammation of the inner lining of the digestive tract is another risk factor in Sigmoidoscopy. Perforation of the intestinal wall, which is a rare complication.
