1. Surgical Procedures

Treatments we offer

The surgeon will perform the sinus surgery by one of the following methods:
1. Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery (FESS)
○ FESS is performed using a tool known as an endoscope. The endoscope is inserted through the nose to reach the sinus openings.
○ To clear the sinuses, the surgeon will use micro telescopes and surgical instruments to remove obstructive tissues and other blockages.
○ The entire procedure is performed through the nostrils, resulting in little to no scarring.

2.Image-guided Endoscopic Sinus Surgery
○ Image-guided endoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure.
○ Small and narrow instruments are passed through the nasal and sinus cavities with the help of an endoscope.
○ The instruments are used to remove the diseased tissues and any obstructed areas in the nose and sinuses.

3. Balloon Sinuplasty
○ Balloon sinuplasty involves dilating your blocked sinus and creating open space, which allows your sinus to drain naturally.
○ A thin catheter attached with a balloon is moved along the wire until it reaches the opening of your blocked sinus.
○ The balloon is then slowly inflated, which gently dilates your sinus opening, allowing normal draining of your sinus. This usually clears the blockage.

4.Caldwell-Luc Operation
○ This is an invasive procedure that is usually performed to drain pus and/or remove a growth inside your maxillary sinus (sinus present behind your upper jaw).
○ Your doctor will make a cut in your upper jaw, above one of the second molar teeth inside your mouth. Through this window, they will enter the sinus cavity and treat the concerning cause of your infection.
○ This surgery can be done under either local or general anaesthesia.

5.Septoplasty
○ It is an outpatient procedure, performed to correct the problems associated with the septum (the bony partition between the nasal passages) of your nose.
○ This process restructures and realigns your deviated septum caused by birth (the nostril pressing against the birthing canal at birth) or from an injury.
○ This opens up your nasal passages, making your breathing easier.

6.Turbinate Reduction
○ Infection, irritation, or allergies can cause the turbinates inside your nose to become swollen and inflamed.
○ Turbinate reduction aims to reduce the size and swelling of these turbinates, making it easier for you to breathe.
○ This procedure generally requires the use of radiofrequency which is transmitted into your tissue by a needle-like instrument causing “controlled damage”.
○ The turbinate begins to shrink in size as your nose heals.

7. Functional Rhinoplasty
○ Functional rhinoplasty is used to correct breathing problems caused by structural abnormalities in your nose.
○ Your doctor will resculpt the bone and cartilage of your nose during the procedure, which may result in a change in nose shape.

8. Open Sinus Surgery
○ This is a major surgical procedure that usually necessitates accessing your sinuses via an incision in your mouth or face.
○ This procedure can be used to clear sinus passages as well as remove major blockages that are causing problems, such as bone spurs.
○ You may need to stay at the hospital for a few days after your surgery.

9. Endoscopic Skull Base Surgery
○ It is performed very rarely for paranasal sinus (nasal cavity extensions that are filled with air).
○ It provides direct access to the paranasal sinus, eliminating the need for flap surgeries.
○ Your doctor will make a small hole inside your nose to remove a growth through an endoscope.
○ This shortens the surgical time and fastens your recovery.

What is Sinus surgery?

Sinus surgery is a procedure that aims to open up your sinus pathways and clear blockages. Sinuses are air-filled cavities within your skull that are located around your eyes, nose, and front of your face. This procedure is done when antibiotics and other medicines have not been successful.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sinus surgery is performed under local or general anaesthesia therefore you don’t feel any pain during the procedure. It is a simple procedure with minimal discomfort and complications. Your doctor will prescribe you painkillers that can be taken after surgery to combat the pain.

You should be able to return to work or school in about a week, and to your routine in about three weeks. However, this varies depending on your job and the extent of your surgery. After your surgery, you will need to visit your doctor regularly for follow-ups.

After having Sinus surgery:
● You can resume your normal diet and include bland, gut-friendly food like yoghurt to prevent digestive issues.
● Avoid eating hot and spicy food, as they may increase your nasal blood flow.
● Drink plenty of fluids.

Sleeping on your side or stomach is not advised for several weeks following the procedure because it puts undue pressure on your nose. Resting on your back in an elevated position relieves congestion and reduces swelling following sinus surgery.

Sinus surgery includes enlarging the openings between your sinuses and the inside of your nose so that air and drainage can pass through. It could entail the removal of infected sinus tissue, bone, or polyps.

Before resorting to surgery, your doctor will try other treatments and procedures. This includes medicines and lifestyle modifications to help relieve sinus infections. If these do not work, then surgery is performed. It is also necessary in cases where you have some defect in your bone structure that can be corrected only by surgical intervention.

Sinus surgery expands the natural drainage pathway of the sinuses, lowering the risk of blockages that can cause acute and chronic sinus infections, as well as Sinus headaches. These conditions can be debilitating, with symptoms such as headaches and facial pain, a runny or blocked nose, and bad breath.

If you continue to put off treatment, your condition may worsen and you might risk any complications associated with emergency surgeries that are higher than planned elective surgeries. You can also develop comorbidities or multiple disorders if you prolong your surgery. You can avoid these problems by seeking help as soon as possible.
