1. Surgical Method

Treatments we offer

Smaller lipomas: If the lipoma is small and single, the doctor may make a small cut in the skin and squeeze the lipoma out. This procedure is performed under local anaesthesia where the patient will stay awake during the procedure and the area in and around the lipoma will be anaesthetized so that the patient does not feel any pain.

Larger lipomas: If there are multiple lipomas or if the size is large that is more than 5 cm, then the patient will be given general anaesthesia. The doctor will make a larger incision on the skin and the lipoma will be removed with the help of surgical instruments. The tissues/cells from the lipoma will be removed and sent to the laboratory for testing Finally, the incision will be closed with the help of sutures and the area will be covered with a pressure bandage to prevent bleeding.

2. Liposuction

Treatments we offer

This approach is used to remove small or large lipomas in locations where the scar is not cosmetically acceptable. An incision is made and fatty tissues are broken down, curetted, and then removed by a needle and a large syringe/a suction machine. Advantages of this approach include a reduction in the duration of surgery and a smaller scar on the skin. Another advantage is that multiple lipomas can be removed through a single opening. Also, there is a lower risk of recurrence. Advantages of this approach include a reduction in the duration of surgery and a smaller scar on the skin. Moreover, this approach enables multiple lipomas to be removed through a single opening.

3. Conservative Method

Treatments we offer

The conservative management consists of injecting steroids into the lipoma. Steroid treatment can shrink the lipoma but does not remove it completely. This method, however, is still under research.

What is Lipoma?

A lipoma is a fat lump of mass that is slow-growing. It is a non-cancerous (benign tumour) and most often situated between the skin and the underlying muscle layer. Lipomas are generally slow-growing and usually harmless. Only rarely can they lead to cancer. They are located just under the skin and move easily when pressure is applied. They are commonly seen on the neck, shoulders, back, abdomen, arms, and thighs. Lipomas are most often asymptomatic. When they arise from fatty tissue between the skin and deep fascia, typical features include a soft, fluctuant feel; lobulation; and free mobility of overlying skin. A characteristic “slippage sign” may be elicited by gently sliding the fingers off the edge of the tumour.

Frequently Asked Questions

Excision of multiple lipomas can cost around INR 80,000 to INR 100,000. Cost may vary on a case-to-case basis depending upon the procedure, complexities associated with the disease, institution, and geographical location.

Small lipomas can be treated with steroid medications and through liposuction, where the lipoma is removed using a needle and a syringe to draw out the fatty tissue.

Lipoma excision is a safe procedure which usually does not involve any risks. A few of the possible complications include bleeding from the incision site and scarring of the thick tissue that grows at the site of an injury. Another complication might involve injection at the site of the incision.

The diagnosis of lipoma takes place through a physical examination to check for consistency of the lipoma, pain while touching the lipoma, surrounding skin texture, and the size of the lipoma.

Lipoma excision is generally done by a dermatologist or a general surgeon.
