Treatments we offer
There are 2 types of cystoscopes – a standard rigid cystoscope and a flexible cystoscope. Your doctor will use the one which is required for your procedure.
- Rigid cystoscope: These cystoscopes cannot bend. Your doctor can perform biopsies and remove tumours by passing instruments through them.
- Flexible cystoscope: These cystoscopes can be bent. The doctor uses it for diagnosing and examining your bladder and urethra from inside.
Treatments we offer
Cystoscopy can be done under local anaesthesia, general anaesthesia, or regional anaesthesia.
- Local anesthesia: This method is used for minor procedures where only the area of the procedure is numbed. This does not require you to avoid food or drinks before the procedure. You can eat normally on the day of the procedure.
- General anesthesia: This keeps you unconscious during the procedure. You will need to avoid food and drinks for around 6 hours before the procedure.
- Regional anesthesia: This method involves an injection in your back (spine). You will be awake during the procedure and only your lower body will be numb.
Treatments we offer
You will be asked to empty your bladder and change into a hospital gown, after which an intravenous line will be established in your arm for the infusion of anaesthetic drugs.
- If you are given a sedative you will be feeling sleepy and relaxed but will respond to verbal commands (moderate sedation).
- If cystoscopy is performed under general anaesthesia, then you will be asleep during the procedure. The nurse may also provide you with antibiotics to prevent bladder infection.
After applying an anaesthetic spray or jelly to numb the urethra, the doctor will insert a lubricated cystoscope (flexible or rigid) into the urethra. Note: The smallest size scope is used by the doctor to visualize the urethra and bladder. If tissue samples are to be taken, then a large-size rigid cystoscope is used.
A simple cystoscopy without anaesthesia is done within 5 to 15 minutes. When sedatives or general anaesthesia is used, the procedure takes about 15 to 30 minutes.
What is Cystocopy?
Cystoscopy is a procedure that is done to diagnose and treat conditions affecting your urinary bladder (the sac that holds your urine) and urethra (the tube that carries the urine out of the body). This procedure is done using a cystoscope. It is a thin tube with an attached lens, a video camera and a light at the end.
A Cystoscopy is done for several reasons. Your doctor may advise a cystoscopy to:
- Investigate urinary problems that include
- Pain while urinating and feeling a constant need to urinate
- Blood in the urine
- Pain in the pelvic region (hip region)
- Frequent urinary tract infections
- Diagnose bladder conditions like
- Cancer (tumour) in your bladder
- Stones in the bladder
- Inflammation of the bladder (cystitis)
- Blockage in the urethra
The doctor can pass surgical tools through the cystoscope to remove small bladder tumours and stones and can also take a sample of the bladder tissue for testing in the laboratory (biopsy).
The Cystoscopy purpose is to also help in diagnosing problems related to enlargement of the prostate gland (a male reproductive gland that secretes fluid which activates the sperms).
Cystoscopy is an outpatient procedure which means that you can go home the same day and can resume work the next day.
In the initial visit, the doctor will discuss with you, your medical history, current medications and allergies. You will be informed about the procedure in detail, the type of anaesthesia that you will receive, and the necessary preparation needed before your procedure.
You may be advised to stop some medications or doses will be adjusted. Antibiotics will be prescribed before and after the procedure if you have UTI (urinary tract infection) or a weak immune system.
The doctor will also ask you to sign a consent form that gives your doctor permission to perform the procedure on you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Cystoscopy is a safe procedure and serious side effects are rare.
Cystoscopy is performed by a urologist (a doctor that specializes in diseases of the urinary tract).
The cost of diagnostic cystoscopy ranges between INR 20,000 to INR 30,000. For operative cystoscopy, it can cost up to INR 2,00,000. This may vary on a case to case basis depending upon the procedure, complexities associated with the disease, institution and geographical location.
The possible complications during a cystoscopy include:
- Urinary tract infections: During cystoscopy, organisms can enter your urinary tract leading to an infection.
- Bleeding from the site of the procedure.
- Pain in the abdomen.
- Injury to the bladder or the urethra.
- Swelling in the urethra: This causes difficulty in urinating.
Cystoscopy is a safe procedure that is used for the diagnosis and treatment of conditions affecting your bladder. The recovery period depends upon the procedure done. Usually, you can get back to your normal activities in 24-48 hours.
If you experience the following symptoms, you need to consult your doctor immediately:
- Inability to urinate
- Burning and discomfort while urinating that lasts for more than two days
- Blood clots in the urine or blood-red urine
- Persistent high fever (with a temperature above 100°F).
Based on the procedure, your doctor will schedule a follow-up appointment. For diagnostic tests, you will get the results immediately. If you have had a biopsy you will need to wait for 4-5 days to receive the results. After the removal of any abnormal growths such as tumours, your doctor will schedule an appointment 7 to 10 days weeks after the procedure to check for proper recovery.
After the procedure, you might feel mild irritation and a burning sensation while urinating. You might also notice blood in your urine and a need to urinate frequently. However, these problems do not last for more than 48 hours after the procedure.
Some general advice to follow after the surgery
After the procedure, you can mostly return home on the same day. In some cases, depending on the procedure, you will need to remain in the recovery room for 1-2 hours until the effect of the anaesthesia wears off.
PostOperative Care Needed For Cystoscopy
- Drink adequate water to flush out the irritants from your bladder. Drink at least 8 - 10 glasses of water in a day.
- You can place a warm, damp cloth over the urethra to reduce the discomfort and pain.
- You will be advised to take medications for pain and antibiotics prescribed by your doctor to combat infections.
- If you have had a biopsy done, you’ll need time to heal. Avoid lifting heavy objects or other strenuous activities for the next two weeks.
- Avoid sexual intercourse until suggested by your doctor.
