Sigmoidoscopy is a procedure that enables the doctor to look inside your sigmoid colon and rectum. The major part of your large intestine known as the colon is responsible for the absorption of water and nutrients from the food you eat. The sigmoid colon is the lower part of your colon which is connected to the anus through the rectum.Sigmoidoscopy is performed using a long, flexible tube called a sigmoidoscope, that has an attached light and camera at the end. This helps the doctor in diagnosing any abnormalities in the sigmoid colon and the rectum. Sigmoidoscopy is an outpatient procedure, which means that you can go home the same day after the procedure. 1. Why is Sigmoidoscopy Done? Why is Sigmoidoscopy done?Sigmoidoscopy helps in diagnosing and treating various diseases of the colon and rectum that include: Bleeding from the rectum , ongoing, unexplained weight loss, and undiagnosed pain in the abdomen. This is done by performing a biopsy. Change in bowel movementsand Removal of growths, and haemorrhoids is also included here. 2. This will help in better visualization of your sigmoid colon during the procedure. A special diet will be asked to be followed. Do not eat solid foods a day before the procedure. You can have liquids in the form of water, gelatin, fat-free broth, tea/coffee without milk, etc. Take a laxative one night before (12 hours) the procedure as advised by your doctor. It can be in a pill, powder, or liquid form that must be taken with water/mixed in water. 3. PostOperative Care PostOperative careAfter the procedure, you will be told to lie on your back for a few minutes before getting up as you may have giddiness from having your head down during the procedure. You will be observed for over an hour after the procedure to check for any bleeding, pain, or any other abdominal discomfort. Once you are able to walk and the symptoms resolve, you will be allowed to go home. You can drive or you can arrange for a person to take you home. Sigmoidoscopy is a procedure that helps examine only the lower portion of the large intestine, whereas a colonoscopy helps examine the entire colon. What is The Advantage of Sigmoidoscopy Over Colonoscopy? Sigmoidoscopy has a number of benefits over colonoscopy. Firstly, it requires less time for bowel preparation that makes it easier for the patient. Secondly, less sedation is required, hence a low risk of complications from anaesthesia. Sigmoidoscopy has fewer side effects and is easy to perform. Are There Any Disadvantages of Sigmoidoscopy? The only disadvantage of sigmoidoscopy is that the doctor can examine only the left side of the colon and remove the polyps (if present). For removal of polyps that are present on the right side, colonoscopy is to be done. Is Sigmoidoscopy Painful? You might feel mild discomfort during the insertion of the sigmoidoscope, but the procedure is not painful and it does not require anaesthesia. What is The Cost of Sigmoidoscopy? Sigmoidoscopy can cost around INR 4,000 depending upon the type of surgery. Cost may vary on a case-to-case basis depending upon the procedure, complexities associated with the disease, institution, and geographical location. What Are The Risks of Sigmoidoscopy? Sigmoidoscopy is a safe procedure and complications are rare. A few of the possible risks include Bleeding from the site in case of a biopsy and Infection in the area of the incision. Inflammation of the inner lining of the digestive tract is another risk factor in Sigmoidoscopy. Perforation of the intestinal wall, which is a rare complication.
