1. Laparoscopic Varicocelectomy

Treatments we offer

During this procedure, the surgeon makes several small incisions in the lower abdomen area. A laparoscope (thin, flexible tube with an attached camera) is inserted into the abdomen. It allows the surgeon to see inside your body using a screen.

Through another tube called a cannula, a gas (carbon dioxide) is introduced into the abdomen to improve the visibility of the internal organs. Through another incision, surgical tools are inserted for sealing the veins that are blocking the blood flow.

The ends of the veins are sealed with the help of small clamps or are cauterized with heat.

Once the veins are sealed the instruments are removed and the incisions are closed with the help of sutures.

2. Open Surgery

Treatments we offer

Open surgery is also called microsurgical varicocelectomy. It is performed under a high-powered operating microscope to achieve high success rates with low risks. This procedure can be performed under local or general anaesthesia.

Here the incision or the cut that is made would be bigger compared to the laparoscopic surgery. The vein is usually approached through your groin. Each vein is dissected circumferentially and then tied off to disrupt the blood flow and provide drainage of blood away from the testicle into the inner thigh and pelvis. Once the veins are sealed, the incisions are closed with the help of sutures.

3. Percutaneous Embolization

Treatments we offer

It is the least invasive way of varicocele repair. This procedure is done under local anaesthesia. The surgeon will access a major vein from the inner thigh area, through which a catheter will be inserted (a thin tube).

A small coil or a special liquid will be released into the affected vein. This acts as a blocking agent and diverts the blood flow into other nearby veins. The blood can then normally exit the scrotum. Once the veins are sealed the catheter is removed and the incision is closed with the help of sutures.

What is a Varicocele?

Varicocele is a common condition that occurs due to an enlargement of the veins in the scrotum. The testes (singular = testis) are a pair of ovoid male reproductive organs present inside the scrotum.

The veins in the scrotum are called the pampiniform plexus. In normal circumstances, you cannot see or feel the veins in the spermatic cord but if you have a varicocele, these veins become enlarged and noticeable. This condition is similar to the varicose veins (swollen, twisted veins) that you develop in your legs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Varicocele surgery is performed by a urologist.

Varicocele surgery does not affect fertility, in fact, it improves the blood flow to the reproductive organs improving fertility.

The exact duration of the procedure will differ from the type of surgery performed. Generally, a varicocele surgery can take 1-2 hours.

The cost of varicocele surgery ranges from INR 25,000 to INR 40,000. Cost may vary on a case-to-case basis depending upon the procedure, complexities associated with the disease, institution, and geographical location.

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience the following:

  • High fever with a temperature above 100°F
  • Difficulty in urinating or emptying your bladder completely
  • Vomiting or feeling nauseous
  • Leg pain or swelling in the legs
  • Severe pain in the site of the surgery that does come down with medications
  • Swelling, redness, bleeding, or abnormal discharge from the site of the incision
  • Varicocele surgery is a safe procedure and complications are rare. A few of the possible risks include:

    • Formation of hydroceles (fluid accumulation around the testicles)
    • Bleeding from the surgery site
    • Infection in the surgery site
    • Injury to the veins in the scrotum
    • Persistence (the problem remains) or recurrence (the condition occurs again) of the varicoceles
    • Blood clots in the veins of the scrotum (thrombophlebitis)

Your doctor will schedule a follow-up visit around 2 weeks after the procedure to check for proper recovery. If the stitches need to be removed then the visit will be scheduled within 7 days after the surgery. A sample of the semen will be checked 3-4 months after the procedure to see if the number of sperms has improved. Spermatogenesis (the development of new sperm cells) takes roughly 72 days and testing any earlier may lead to false results.

The recovery period after the procedure depends on the type of surgery performed. Generally, you can get back to your normal activities in 2-3 weeks after the surgery. Recovery from open surgery can take 3-6 weeks. Those who have undergone percutaneous embolization can get back to normal activities in one or two days.

This is an outpatient procedure and you can return home on the same day. Therefore, you need to arrange for a friend or family member to drop you home after your procedure.

Some general advice to follow after the surgery

Before the procedure:
Discuss your medical history and the medications and any allergies with your doctor. You will also be required to inform your doctor about any dietary supplements which you may be taking. If you are a smoker, you will need to stop smoking immediately.

On The Day of The Procedure:
You will be asked to sign a consent form that permits your doctor to perform the procedure on you, after which your vital signs will be checked, along with a fitness check-up with the anaesthetist.

Post-operative Care For Varicocele Surgery
Varicocele surgery is a safe procedure with minimal side effects. It improves your fertility and reduces complications due to blocked blood flow to your reproductive organs. Follow the post-surgical instructions correctly for a faster recovery and better results.

At The Hospital

After the surgery, you will remain in the recovery room for 1-2 hours where you will be under observation. Your vital signs will be monitored during this time. Once you are stable you can return home. Before leaving the hospital, you will be given the necessary instructions to follow after the procedure and the necessary medications such as painkillers and antibiotics will be prescribed.

At Home

During the first week post-surgery, you will be advised to:

Avoid the following activities after the procedure:
